Geography revision Flashcards
Revise (13 cards)
Selective logging
Cutting down any older or diseased trees instead of young and healthy ones. Maintains forest structure, canopy intact and no soil exposed to erosion.
Replanting
New trees replace those felled available for future generations. Same type of tree planted – ensures biodiversity.
Ecotourism
Tourism minimises the damage done to the ecosystem and benefits the local people. Small number of visitors = less waste and pollution caused.
Education
Awareness = people buy from sustainable sources. Educating local people about the long term damage and other ways to make money prevents deforestation.
International agreements
Countries agree on what and where they can do something to preserve the ecosystem on a global rate.
Conservation
Areas restricted from poachers or taking from the environment. This is done to preserve and maintain a healthy environment.
Debt relief
Lic’s borrow money from other countries to help improve health care, education and general state of life. Stops people relying on destroying the rainforest for money.
Where is tundra?
The artic circle due to it being very cold there because it has higher latitudes and less solar radiation.
Where is the tropical rainforest?
Located in the equatorial zone. It is very hot and wet because sunlight strikes the tropics almost straight on, producing intense solar energy that keeps temperatures high and high temperature keep the air warm and wet.
Where is the hot deserts?
Hot deserts are between 15-30 degrees north and south of the equator. They are warm because they are close to the equator, which gets most of the solar radiation due to it being almost head on.
Thar desert location
The the thar desert is located in the continent of Asia. It is in the northern hemisphere. It is on the borders of India and Pakistan, but mainly in Indias. The dosest ocean is the Indian Ocean.
Opportunities
Mineral extraction: materials such as limestone are used for construction. Tourism: tens of thousands of people visit, which improves the economy. Energy: fossil fuels are found in the desert. Farming: to grow crops and nurture animals for money.
Challenges
Extreme temperatures: Temperatures that exceed 50 degrees disrupt the farmers working and causes water shortages. Water supply: drinking water is poor and can cause illness or disease if it is not treated properly. Accessibility: road networks are limited and sometimes the only way to get to places is by camel.
