12
Q

Explain surface run-off

A

When water flows over the ground as it cannot infiltrate because ground is saturated

13
Q

Explain impermeable surfaces

A

Means water can’t pass through this increases surface run-off as water cannot infiltrate through the ground.

14
Q

Explain lack of interception

A

Vegetation interrupts the water meeting the ground so the lack of it means if will meet the ground quicker and can increase surface run- off

17
Q

Name the third step of the formation of a hurricane

A

Rising warm air evaporates and starts to spin

18
Q

Name the fourth step of the formation of a hurricane

A

The air then cools and condenses to form clouds

19
Q

Name the fifth step of the formation of a hurricane

A

More air is sucked in causing strong winds

20
Q

Name an example of a hurricane

A

Hurricane sandy on the coast of the USA in 2012

21
Q

What are the social effects of hurricane sandy

A

147 deaths power failure in new York hospital led to evacuation of 215 patients and millions of homes and businesses without power

22
Q

What are the economic effects of hurricane sandy

A

Second most costly hurricane in record causing in 71 million in damages 18000 flights were cancelled disrupting business and tourism.

23
Q

What are the environmental effects of hurricane sandy

A

651000 houses were damaged in new jersey and new York sewage contaminated water

24
Q

What is drought?

A

A long period of abnormally dry weather leads to a severe water shortage.

25
What is animals overgrazing?
The land exhausts the soil
26
What is limited periods of rainfall?
Abnormally drier than usual due to climate change
27
What is geographical location?
Some countries located in high pressure belts that recieve limited rainfall e.g the sahel region of Africa
28
What is over cultivation of land?
This means the lands is continuously used to grow crops and never had time to recover
29
What is deforestation?
Cutting down too many trees means the soil is unable to hold so much moisture this dries out the soil
30
What are the effects of drought?
Soil becomes to dry to replant crops which means crops cannot be sold/ famine as people are unable to eat
31
What are the responses for drought?
Educate people, charities donate money and equipment, switch to crops that don't require much water and leave land to recover between cultivating crops.
32
Explain when the beast of the east began and what if created.
Begin on the 22/02/18 created winds over 70mph in some parts of the UK.
33
What caused the beast from the east?
The northern polar jet stream twisted direction causing cold air to hit the UK from the east bringing freezing air from Siberia.
34
What are the impacts from the beast from the east?
10 people died 8260 road collisions and closed schools up to 3 days created a 1 billion loss for the UK economy.
35
How did people respond to the beast from the east?
People advised to stay home. RAF pilots dropped emergency supplies millions in compensation paid to people affected.
36
What is a wildfire?
A large uncontrolled fire that spreads quickly over shrub or forest land.
37
What are the physical causes of wildfires?
Lightening strikes, high temperatures combined with periods of no rainfall
38
What are human causes of wildfires?
Careless disposal of BBQs not putting out campfires
39
Name an example of a wildfires.
Californian
