Geography. Topic : Earthquakes Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is an earthquake
A sudden tremor (shaking) in the Earth’s crust. This is caused by movement of plates
What is the term Tectonic
Movements of the plates of the crust
Define the plate boundary convergent
Two plates going towards each other
Define the plate boundary divergent
Two plates moving away from each other
Define the plate boundary Transverse/ Transform
Tectonic plates slide horizontally past each other
Along convergent plate margins what is likely to occur
Along convergent plate margins earthquakes are likely to occur
Where is one place that the plates also meet’s
The edge is where the plates also meet’s
What are margins named based on
Margins are named based on the direction they move
What is seismograph
Seismograph is the instrument used to detect an earthquake
What is an Richter scale
A Richter scale tell’s how strong the earthquake is by using numbers/ measure’s the magnitude (strength) of an earthquake
Describe three (3) precautions to be taken during an earthquake
D - Drop
C- cover your head
H- Hold on to a firm structure
What is an aftershock
An aftershock refers to what happens after the initial earthquake
