What is a tourist?
anyone who travels to and stays in a place outside their usual environment for not more than a year
What is international tourism?
tourism outside one’s own country
What is domestic tourism?
tourism within one’s own country
What is honey pot tourism?
places that attract a large number of visitors due to the site’s beauty
What is MICE tourism?
meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions tourism. places with venues that host large scale events
What are the characteristics of MICE tourism?
–> supported by infrastructure and services (hotels, retail stores)
–> some cities are more successful as they are e.g. located along international air routes
–> Singapore’s World Congress on Intelligent Transport System 2019
What is medical tourism?
places with reputable medical facilities for medical procedures to restore or enhance health
–> usually found in developed countries
–> most obtain these treatments due to high unavailability in home country/avoid long waiting time/high costs
What is tourism from theme parks and man-made attractions?
amusement parks or attractions with a central subject/theme such as movies
–> Hello Kitty Theme Park (Tokyo)
What is heritage tourism?
places with rich culture
–> people visit to experience different cultures/understand history
–> reinforces national identities for domestic tourists
–> promote culture, history and identity
–> Buckingham Palace
What is film-induced tourism?
places that become attractions from being featured in films
–> visitors understand how the scene was filmed/just out of curiosity
–> Middle Earth tours (Ireland)
What is pilgrimage tourism?
places of religious significance where people travel of religious purposes
–> journey to a sacred place
–> major religious holidays/events draw large crowds
–> Vatican City, Jerusalem, etc…
What is dark tourism?
places of conflict where battles, wars, man-made tragedies unfavourable political situations have occurred
–> museums and memorials, fortifications and battlefields, important in modern history
–> Ruins in Pompeii, Holocaust Museum in Israel
