3
Q

hydraulic action

A

Fast flowing water hits the rock or soil and forces water in cracks and the pressure of the water and air cause it to explode

attrition

A

When stones hit each other and break each other up, which makes them smooth and rounded

16
Q

Drainage basin

A

An area of land drained by a river

17
Q

Long profile

A

Shows how the relief changes as the river flows from the source to the mouth

18
Q

confluence

A

The point where 2 rivers meet

19
Q

Tributary

A

A small river the joins a larger river

20
Q

watershed

A

The boundary of 2 Drainage basins

21
Q

Cross profile

A

What the cross section of the river channel looks like at certain points along a rivers course

22
Q

More resistant rock

23
Q

Less resistant rock

24
Q

What is the first step of a waterfall forming?

A

A river flows over an area of hard rock followed by an area of soft rock, which is less resistant to erosion.

25
what is the second step of a waterfall forming?
Abrasion erodes the soft rocks, creating a step in the river. More hydraulic action and abrasion occur, further eroding the soft rock.
26
What is the 3rd step of a waterfall forming
A plunge pool is created as the collapsed rocks erode the soft rock though abrasion and hydraulic action. The hard cap rock is undercut and forms an overhang.
27
What is the 4th and final step of forming a waterfall?
The overhang collapses into the plunge pool. Over time, the waterfall retreats backwards, forming a steep sided gorge.
