East Germany
A communist state in Central Europe. “Workers and Peasants State.” (GDR). Occupied by the Soviet Union.
GDR
German Democratic Republic. Socialist state of East Germany. The saw themselves as a democracy but were actually a dictatorship.
Goals of East German Film
To promote socialism and the working class.
Socialism
Political/economic theory that supports the means of production/distribution. Industries are owned by the workers.
SED
Socialist Unity Party. Supported socialist, Marxist-Lennist, and communist ideas. Ruling party of the GDR.
DEFA
State owned film studio of the GDR. First film studio of post WWII Germany- made films to re-educate German citizens after Nazi rule.
Socialist realism
Cultural doctrine in the Soviet Union that promoted life under socialism (state-sponsored art form). It calls for art to critique the conditions of the working class. It banned criticism and promoted propaganda.
Critical realism
Philosophy that distinguishes between the “real” and “obersvable” world. The world is constructed from our percieved notions.
Bitterfeld way
An innitiative to bridge the gap between artists and the working class.
11th Congress of the Central Committee of the SED
Lead into shelf films. Called for a wave of bans on films that critiqued socialism.
Shelf films (Rabbit films)
Films that were banned by East Germany due to critiques of the GDR.
Erich Honecker
German communist politician. Led the GDR. Dictator.
State control over film
Censored films to protect communism and critique of the government.

German film company (1918-1933). Producer of WWI propaganda and service films. Promote German culture internationally. Made notable silent films.
