Who was Stressemann?
Chancellor then foreign minister in the early twenties who actually fixed the Weimar into working somewhat effectively.
How did Stressemann fix Hyperinflation in 1923?
-Replaced the old currency with the Rentenmark
PRO-Fixed most problems to do with Hyperinflation and stabilised the economy
CON-Many lost their savings
How did Stressemann fix the problems with troops in the Ruhr in 1924?
-Met with France,Britain and America to make the Dawes plan which involved a loan from the USA and reparations to be spread out.
PRO-Reparations were now manageable
CON-Later with the Great Depression things got worse again
How did Stressemann adapt the amount Germany had to pay?
-With the young plan which reduced payments to £2.2 billion
How did Stressemann fix the lack of trust everyone had in Germany?
- By getting Germany into the league of nations
- Signing the Kellogg-Briand pact that said Germany wouldn’t actively fight unless in the interest of self defence.
Why was there a cultural revival?
-The Kaiser had censorship but now he was gone there was freedom meaning art etc boomed
What was peoples problem with a cultural revival?
- The countryside especially didnt like it
- They thought Weimar culture was immoral
What caused the Great Depression?
The wall street crash
Why did the Great Depression have such a large impact on Germany?
-The Dawes Plan consisted largely of a loan from America which they needed to be repaid
What impacts did the Great Depression have?
- Businesses went bankrupt as they were unable to pay
- Unemployment rose as millions lost their jobs
- People forced into poverty so don’t purchase as much
- Demand for German goods dropped
How did this affect extremist parties?
- Workers turned to communism and it gained popularity
- Rich/Middleclass wanted Germany great again and like right-wing parties.
