Gertude Geology questions Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the UK main rock types
-Igneous
-Sedimentary
-Metamorphic
How are igneous rocks formed?
These are a result of volcanic activity in the past
How are some igneous (Balsalt) formed?
Some of the igneous rocks are due to lava reaching the surface, cooling and solidifying
Eg
Igneous rock landmark
Eg:The Giant Causeway, Northern Ireland
What are sedimentary rocks made off?
Of small particle of sand and rocks
How are sedimentary rocks?
- Sediments transported by the wind, rivers and ice, and deposited on sea beds
- Over millions of years the sediments accumulate which are compressed into layers
Eg
Sedimentary rocks
- Sandstone
- Chalk
- Limestone
Eg
Metamorphic rocks
- Slate
- Marble
How did glacier influence the physical landscape ?
The last ice age in the UK took place around 18,000 years ago. During this time temperature remained low throughout the year and Ice sheets and glaciers covered the north, eroding it
State what patterns are in the UK’s landscape
- Altitude of land
- Rock types
- Types of land features
- Rainfall
- Temperature
- Main erosion types
- Relief type
- Past activity
- Uses of geology
Explain how it is important to understand the UK’s geology
- Improve energy security
- Helps to assess environmental/economic impacts of building projects
- Allows for effective regulation/research/surveying of the land
Describe the location of important shale oil and gas deposits in the UK
Northwestern/Southern England and Scotland
Explain how UK rivers have determined settlement locations
- Water discharge
- Transportational ability on river
- Defensive protection of river(i.e Can the enemy simply tread the river, or do they have to bring a seamster)
- Industrial potential of river
