What is Federalism?
A system in which power is divided between the national and state governments.
What is a Pardon?
President grants freedom from punishment for a person convicted of a crime.
What is Popular Sovereignty?
Americans vote (election day).
What are Concurrent Powers?
Government powers that are shared between the state and federal government.
What are Delegated Powers?
Government powers that have been granted to federal government only.
What are Reserved Powers?
Government powers that have been granted to the state or private citizens only.
What are the three branches of government?
Legislative, Executive, Judicial.
What is the Legislative Branch?
The branch of government that makes the laws, Congress.
What is the Executive Branch?
The branch of government that carries out laws, President.
What is the Judicial Branch?
The branch of government that interprets laws.
What is the Supremacy Clause?
If there is conflict between a state law and federal law, the Constitution establishes the federal law.
What is the House of Representatives?
Lower house of Congress, 435 members.
How long is a Senator’s term?
6 years.
What is Judicial Review?
The power of the courts to declare laws unconstitutional.
What is eminent domain?
Power of a government to take private property for public use.
What is an example of a responsible citizen?
Receive education, obey laws, serve on juries, vote in elections, have good moral character, defend/support their nation.
Which amendment protects the rights of the accused?
6th Amendment protects the rights to a lawyer, fair jury trial, and habeas corpus.
Which amendment protects citizens from being tried twice for the same crime?
5th Amendment.
