(7 cards)
What is the importance of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come?
Reflects the uncertainty of the future and how our actions in the present affect our future. Personifies death, which is inevitable for all humans, changes the positive tone in the novella and shows a more serious nature of his message. Dickens is saying that miserable capitalists who are greedy will not be missed. The holy spirit helped Jesus resurrect; just let the spirits help Scrooge be reborn into someone better. More sinister than the previous ghosts. This spirit seals the moral lesson of the story. Dickens changes the tone of the novella, signalling to us the serious nature of his message.
“The phantom slowly, gravely, silently approached”
List of adverbs to create the impression that just as the phantom is approaching, Scrooge’s fears are also approaching, which frightens Scrooge and the reader because it parallels our own fears coming closer to us. Slows the pace and establishes the graver, more solemn tone. This creates sudden suspense and a dark theme to lay the foundations of the stave. Expresses how Scrooge is petrified of the unknown, ominous.
“It was shrouded in a deep black garment”
appears as a mysterious and unknowable figure, literally shrouded in darkness. suggests the future is unknowable and mysterious, like the ghost of yet to come.Alluding to death imaging to be like to grim reaper, foreshadowing Scrooge’s death later on in Stave 4. The most haunting in appearance
“The spirit answered not, but pointed with it’s hand”
Always pointing at things that should teach scrooge a lesson. This shows the ghost to have a didactic purpose. The spirit’s silence is unrelenting. He is heard yet his movements and silence are incredibly powerful as scrooge is forced to connect the pieces on his own. Highlights how actions speak louder than words. The Ghost is demanding despite his silence
“The spirit neither spoke nor moved”
Scrooge is given some control back, as if being slowly released into the world. This renders scrooge like a child; when scrooge was a child, he was not greedy and covetous in the way he is now. The spirit’s silence is unrelenting. he never speaks yet his movements allows scrooge to understand and resolve things himself.
“The kind hand trembled”
Trembled connotations of weakness. The spirits power is warning. Spirit beginning to weaken snd lose it power when scrooge vocally demonstrates that he’s learnt his lesson. The spirit is not as omnipotent as its been presented during the novella. The kindness scrooge is developing can be seen as the most powerful weapon. “Kind” symbolises hoe despite daunting appearance, it has the right intentions.
“I know your purpose is to do me good”
Scrooge understands that the Ghosts have only benefited him and taught him good lessons. Their sole purpose is to help Scrooge and redeem himself, she that he doesn’t end up being “ignorant” and cause “want” in society
