What is a gastrectomy?
Surgical removal of a part or the whole of the stomach
Why can’t you survive without the small bowel?
Would lose blood supply —> no nutrient intake
- support required: > 200cm + no continuity
100-150cm + continuity
What is SBS?
Small Bowel Syndrome
- damage/absence of parts of
small bowel —> lack of nutrient absorption
—> diarrhoea —> dehydration, lethargy
—> weight loss
—> cramps
What is oesophageal varices?
Enlarged veins in oesophagus —> blocked by portal vein
What is a Mallory-Weiss tear?
Split in the inner layer of oesophagus
- caused by forceful vomiting, retching or straining
What is haemorrhagic gastritis?
Open sores in stomach lining
What is a duodenal ulcer?
Peptic ulcer in duodenum
What are gastric ulcers?
Stomach ulcers
- mucusal breaks down —> acid damage
- usually H. pylori bacteria
What is ischaemic bowel disease?
Blood flow to part of the large intestine is temporarily reduced
What is intussesception?
The inversion of one portion of the intestine within another
What is Meckel’s diverticulum?
Congenital abnormality of the small intestine causing bulging projection
What is angiodysplasia?
An abnormal, tortuous, dilated small blood vessel in the mucosal and submucosal layers of the GI tract
What is colon cancer?
Malignant tumour in large bowel
What is rectosigmoidal cancer?
Malignant tumour in rectum/sigmoid colon
What is inflammatory bowel disease?
Chron’s disease or ulcerative colitis
What are haemorrhoids?
Lumps in and aroundn anus
What is an anal fissure?
Tear in anus
What is diverticulitis?
Small bulges/pockets (diverticula) in colon —> inflamed and infected
What are the 3 causes of low volume rectal bleeding?
- Internal haemorrhoids
- Anal fissure
- Large bowel carcinoma
What are the 4 causes of high volume rectal bleeding?
- Diverticulitis
- Angiodysplasia
- Aortoenteric fistula (herald bleed)
- Upper GI issues
