What was the Haymarket Riot?
A scandal in which a bomb was thrown during a protest for labor rights and 8 anarchists were arrested and tried for the crime without any evidence.
What did the 13th Amendment accomplish?
Outlawed slavery; was the principal amendment behind the Civil War.
What was the significance of Plessy v Ferguson?
Court case where Homer Plessy, an American who was 1/8 black, was taken off the white train car for his mixed race. The case concluded that black and white facilities would remain ‘Separate but Equal’.
What were Jim Crow laws?
Legalized and encouraged segregation in public institutions, negating the new progressive values of racial equality.
What were disenfranchisement methods?
Methods used to devalue and negate the African American vote after the 15th amendment granted all citizens the right to vote. These included poll taxes, literacy tests, the grandfather clause, violence, and intimidation.
What was the World Columbian Expo?
The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, meant to showcase the world’s developing technology and cultures, attended by 27 million people. While the technology sections were impressive, the cultural sections were often racist.
What was Ellis Island?
New York immigration post where incoming migrants were admitted into the US.
What are ethnic cities?
Cities where immigrants settled, increasing diversity. For example, areas like Little Italy or Chinatown became main operating bases for incoming immigrants.
What is nativism?
Discrimination against foreign immigrants by American-born Americans, particularly against the Irish in the 1800s and Eastern Europeans and Chinese in the early 1900s.
What is urbanization?
The process where rural life offered fewer opportunities than urban life, causing many to move to cities, leading to rapid city expansion.
What are tenements?
Units of housing that were overcrowded and had poor living conditions, prevalent among the working class in large cities.
What are skyscrapers?
Elegant towers constructed during the gilded age to provide more real estate in city centers, notably built in Chicago after the Chicago Fire.
What were Progressive Movements?
New movements in the early 1900s advocating for worker’s rights, with Teddy Roosevelt as a notable supporter.
What is muckraking?
Journalism aimed at exposing the wrongdoings of celebrities or businesses, commonly used during the Gilded Age.
What is ‘The Jungle’?
A book by Upton Sinclair revealing the disgusting conditions in the work industry, particularly in the factory meat market.
Who was Ida B Wells?
An American activist protesting the lack of African American involvement in the world’s fair and the frequent lynching of black people.
What was the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire?
An incident where factory workers were locked inside during a fire, raising protests for worker safety considerations.
