21
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:

P. 67 “temple priestess gives bread and wine:

A

This is the temple priestess giving Enkidu bread and wine. This is significant because bread and wine symbolizes civilization because it is not hunter-gather, it is a process to make. Because Enkidu has now consumed bread and wine he is now a part of civilization. It is important to know that he used to be wild because he later reminds Gilgamesh of the horrors of Humbaba.

22
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:

pg.69 “mighty G and E met him… embraced and their..”

A

This is when Enkidu and Gilgamesh’s friendship started. It is significant because they started out as enemies and ended up as assets. Later on we see Gilgamesh crying over Enkidu’s death which shows how truly special their bond was.

23
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:

Pg.70 “I am weak, my arms have lost his strength..

A

Here, Enkidu is bored because he is used to adventure. Because of this they start their journey to fight Humbaba. This is similar to when he is dying. In Mesopotamia they needed wood so maybe this is the real reason they went to the forest

24
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:

Pg.73 “I am committed to this enterprise..leave an enduring name behind”

A

Gilgamesh wants to fight Humbaba to leave a legacy. Meaning, he knows he is going to die. Later, he goes to great lengths to find Utnapishtim, to escape death as a whole. In the end, he does end up dying contently (full circle moment).

25
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:

Pg.82 and 83
“Let me go free…”
“Do not listen to him”

A

Humbaba asks to be set free and Gilgamesh wants to have mercy. However, Enkidu remembers Humbaba from his past wild animal life. This is significant because usually, Gilgamesh is the bad guy and Enkidu the good guy but here the roles reverse. It is evident here that Gilgamesh starts having remorse for ppl in contrast to the beginning of the book. Maybe Arurus plan is working.

26
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:

Pg.88,89
Bull of heaven “he snorts a lot and makes cracks, cuts out heart and gives to shamash, enkidu throws thigh at ishtart” “one of 2 must die”

A

Ishtar sends Gilgamesh the bull of heaven because he rejected her. When Enkidu’s throws the thigh of the bull in Ishtar’s face to mock her there is a shift in his niceness.
This is why Ishtar wants one of them dead so ultimately Enkidu just wanting Gilgamesh ends up killing him.

27
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:

Pg. 92. “Enkidu dreams of his death’” “being taken to the scary afterlife”

A

Gods are warning Enkidu of death which is a very scary thing at that time. This is one of many dreams in the text and dreams are really important in this story.
Because Enkidu throws the thigh and angers Ishtar he has to die. The death effects Gilgamesh very much.

28
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:

Pg. 97: “what my brother is now, that shall I be when i am dead”

A

After mourning for 7 days for Enkidu, Gilgamesh realizes that this is what he will become and starts his search for immortality. He becomes so immersed in it that he goes on the greatest search for his life. But in the end he learns to accept his death and dies contently. The people end up mourning for him. Ironically, he ends up putting his life in danger (lions, man scorpion, mountain) to find immortality.

29
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:
Pg. 102: “Gilg, where are you hurrying to?”

A

Siduri tells Gilgamesh to enjoy life and he rejects her advice. He doesn’t listen to her but later on one could say that he does end up listening (by giving flower to old people). He does not respect a perfectly respectable women giving him advice.

30
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:
103: “anger and the boat”

A

Gilgamesh ends up breaking the boat in rage and shows he’s still immature and ruins his own path. He’s upset because someone finally criticized his mission and his big ego could handle that.

31
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:
108: “the uproar of mankind is intolerable” (enlil says this) (story of flood)

A

Enlil says people are annoying him so he decides to bring a flood. Utnapishtim is telling Gilgamesh how he got eternal life and Ea saved him. The Gods are beginning to not act godly. They are willing to destroy the world just because they are annoyed.

32
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:
110: “even the gods were scared of the flood”

A

This shows that Gods don’t even have that much power. The Gods realize the mistake that they made, and are happy Utnapishtim survived so the grant him eternal life.

33
Q

QUOTATION ANALYSIS:
“Take flower to old man”

A

Gilgamesh changes and gives a flower to an old man which shows empathy, but the snake takes it.
