Miss Julie is a naturalist play. Both written by August Strindberg in 1888.
The Ibsen Campaign
June 7th-June 28th, 1889. It began when A Doll’s House opened at the Novelty Theatre in Copenhagen.
Spearheaded by Archer, the intent was to promote Ibsen’s works which challenged social norms and advocated for more realistic, yet controversial theatre.
Music Halls
Had their “Hay Day” between 1890-1910. They were the primary vitorian home of professional entertainment.
-Songs, dancing, playlets, comedy, feats, and acrobatics.

Written by G.B. Shaw in 1890, expressing his thoughts on Ibsen’s work as both a critic and a dramatist.

An avant-garde french comedy written by Alfred Jarry in1896.

Ubu Roi Riots
A myth that came to be in 1968 which claims that the word “Merdre” in Jarry’s “Ubu Roi” caused a riot on the opening night of the show. which consisted of jigging, and someone falling into the prompter box.

-Extraordinary coincidences, recognitions, and SFX.
Moral reform Melodrama
Intended to warn audiences about worldliness/immoral behavior, and instead promote virtuous behavior.
