GLACIATED LANDFORMS Flashcards
(14 cards)
corrie
Armchair-shaped hollows formed by freeze-thaw, plucking, and rotational slip.
arête
Narrow ridge formed when two corries erode back-to-back.
pyramidal peak
Sharp summit formed by three or more corries eroding a mountain.
u shaped valley
Steep-sided, flat-floored valley formed by abrasion and plucking as a glacier moves down a river valley.
hanging valley
Smaller valleys left “hanging” above the main trough; tributary glaciers erode less deeply.
truncated spurs
Ridges cut off by glacier erosion, leaving steep cliff-like edges.
drumlin
Elongated hills of till; blunt end faces upstream; formed by ice reshaping deposited material.
erratics
Large rocks transported from origin by ice, left behind as ice melts.
outwash plain
Sorted sands/gravel deposited by meltwater beyond the glacier.
eskers
Long sinuous ridges of sand/gravel deposited in subglacial meltwater tunnels.
james
Mounds of sorted sediment deposited by meltwater in ice hollows or lakes.
kame terrace
Ridges of sediment at valley sides, from meltwater between glacier and valley wall.
moulins
Vertical shafts where surface meltwater enters glacier.
moraine
• Lateral – Along valley sides.
• Medial – Middle, from two glaciers merging.
• Terminal – At the snout; shows max extent.
• Recessional – Behind terminal; pauses in retreat.
• Formed from till dropped as glacier melts.
