Glaciation Flashcards
(13 cards)
Freeze thaw weathering
Water seeps into cracks in rocks or soil and freezes, this causes the rock or soil to break
Abrasion
Pebbles/sediment grind against a solid surface causing the surface to erode over time
Plucking
When glaciers move down hill and rip pieces of rock from the ground
Rotational slip
The mass of their ice and downhill slope act to make the ice/glacier move down in a curved or rotational movement
Bulldozing
Glacier pushes rock and debris downhill in a straight line
Deposition
The process by which glaciers carry and drop sediment and rocks as they mover over land or when the melt
Corrie
An arm char shaped hollow found on the side of a mountain
—>plucking, rotational slip, abration
Arête
Thin jagged crest that separates.
—> made by two adjacent corries
Pyramidal peaks
A mountain feature when three corries meet our two arêtes meet
Truncated spurs
When a glacier erodes the mends of interlocking spurs in a valley
Glacial troughs
The land form created by glaciers, u shaped, steep sides, flat/rounded bottom
—> plucking, abration
Ribbon lakes
Long narrow lake which occurs in a u-shaped valley, after a glacier has melted
Hanging valley
Smaller side valley left ‘hanging’ above the main U-shaped valley. Formed by a tributary glacier.
