Glaciation- UK physical landscapes Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is abrasion?
Erosion caused by rocks and boulders in the base of a glacier acting as a giant file scratching and scraping rocks below.
What is an Arete
A sharp, knife like ridge formed between two corries cutting back by erosion and freeze-thaw.
What is bulldozing?
Ice pushes material of all shapes and sizes as it moves slowly forward.
What is conservation?
Managing the environment in order to preserve, protect or restore it.
What is a corrie?
(cirque or cwm)
Basin shaped hollows due to a glacier being formed and moving causing abrasion and plucking, steepening the back wall.
What is a pyrimidal peak?
Sharp, jagged angular mountain peak found in glacial areas, formed when 3 or more corries erode back to back.
What is a hanging valley?
A secondary valley that is much higher than the main valley it join onto.
What is a truncated spur?
They form from interlocking spurs, when a glacier has cut through existing interlocking spurs.
