Global Distribution of Resources. Flashcards
(14 cards)
(2)
What is the difference between malnutrition and undernutrition?
MALnutrition: Unbalanced diet
UNDERnutrition: Deficiency of nutrients.
Why do people need water?
- Cooking
- Drinking
- Sanitation
(2)
What would happen if a LIC is suffering from a lack of sanitation?
- increasing water-borne diseases
- as water sources get POLLUTED.
(2)
Why is energy significant in a country’s development?
- required for TRANSPORT and INDUSTRY.
- supplies ELECTRICITY.
(4)
Explain how our demand for food has changed overtime.
- 1960s - mostly fruits + veg
- now: wide range of products.
- Exotic fruits, spices more common due to INCREASING INCOMES.
- Seasonal products: Fruits + vegs imported to meet demand for seasonal produce all year round.
- Organic produce: increasing environmental awareness.
(4)
Describe the correlation with carbon dioxide and food miles.
Food miles( where food is imported/exported to and from)
–> MORE CARBON FOOTPRINTS
–> MORE CO2.
- global warming.
(3)
Explain how farming is becoming more industrialised.
- AGRIBUSINESS = large-scale INDUSTRIAL FARMING.
- using lots of CHEMICALS to grow crops
- More machinery displacing those in the farming industry.
Which areas of the UK have a water surplus?
NORTH AND WEST
(3)
Why does the south east and the Midlands have water defecits?
- HIGH POPULATION density
- Greater DEMAND for water THAN SUPPLY
- = Water DEFECIT.
(3)
Explain how water pollution can be managed.
- provide WATER TRANSFER SCHEMES.
- IMPROVE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS
- regulating amounts and types of FERTILISERS used.
(2)
Define energy mix.
The combinations of different energy sources to meet a country’s / region’s total energy demand.
(4)
How has the UK’s energy mix changed overtime?
- 1970: 91% energy came from coal + oil
- Shift away from burning fossil fuels and going towards RENEWABLES.
- 2014: 19% of all electricity from renewable soruces.
- WIND AND BIOENERGY are the biggest sources of RENWEABLE ENERGY.
(2)
How dos the extraction of fossil fuels result in economical issues?
- More reserves being used up = more EXPENSIVE.
- UK has to PAY its imported energy from other countries.
(3)
How does the production of fossil fuels result in environmental issues?
- burning of fossil fuels = CO2
- Fracking: pollutes groundwater + cause mini-earthquakes.
- Natural ecosystems can get damaged.
