• anticyclone- air moves clockwise around it, so hot dry air from the centre of the continent was brought to western europe causing temperature to rise and rainfall to drop (wind dre in hot air from a high pressure system across europe)
• this blocked low pressure systems (blocking high pressure) that usually made it cooler and rainier
