A religion based on the teachings of the prophet Mohammed which stresses belief in one god (Allah), Paradise and Hell, and a body of law written in the Quran. Followers are called Muslims.

A pilgrimage to Mecca, performed as a duty by Muslims.

The holiest city of Islam; Muhammad’s birthplace.

Month of fasting.
What is the Quran?
The holy book of Muslims.
What is a mosque?
A Muslim place of worship.
What is the Ka’aba?
The most sacred temple of Islam, located at Mecca.
What language is associated with Islam?
Arabic.
What is a Shiite?
A member of the branch of Islam that regards Ali as the legitimate successor to Mohammed and rejects the first three caliphs.
What is a Sunni?
A branch of Islam whose members acknowledge the first four caliphs as the rightful successors of Muhammad.
What was the Umayyad Empire?
The first great Muslim dynasty to rule the empire of the Caliphate.
What was the Abbasid Empire?
The second Islamic Empire. Descendants of Muhammad’s family.
What is a Caliph?
A supreme political and religious leader in a Muslim government.

Area ruled by a caliph.

Tax on non-Muslims.
