Globalisation Flashcards
(5 cards)
Relative deprivation and globalisation
Taylor says global capitalism has created a greater sense of relative deprivation and inequality, causing more crimes to flourish. This means that the nature of crime has changed and we have even seen the resurgence of some crimes such as piracy in Nigeria. This is caused by a globalised economy
Globalisation and Organised Crime
Another way globalisation has affected crime is by changing how organised crime works. In the past many sociological studies demonstrated that criminal organisations have often operated in a very local fashion much like legitimate businesses. Hobbs and Dunnigham suggest that organised crime works on a global level. Glenny suggests many criminal organisations have developed a business model that is very similar to transnational companies eg Chechen mafia in Russia - the McMafia
Globalisation and New Crime
According to Castells the global criminal economy has taken on many forms. For example he indicates new crimes have developed due to increased communication technology eg cybercrime
Crime and Globalised Capitalism
These crimes are often linked to the supply and demands of a global capitalist economy. For example, rich countries in the west often demand products and poor countries often step into the breach to meet such demands eg Colombia supplying cocaine and Afghanistan supplying heroin.
Globalisation and Terrorism
Some sociologists believe that the growth of international terrorism is linked to the process of globalisation. Muslim countries think their countries are becoming increasingly westernised. May develop resistance identities (Lyon)
Beck - risk society - increased choice and threat of terrorism means harsher forms of social control but also an increase in state crime
