Globalisation and education Flashcards
(32 cards)
Globalisation is the
increased interconnections of the world- politically, culturally and economically.
positive aspect of globalisation
we increasingly look to other nations and cultures to find solutions to problems- including education system
One aspect of education that has become global..
Performance ranking- international ranking that records the effectiveness of the education system in countries
What test is sat for international rankings by students and what areas do they cover.
PISA or TIMSS- tests are conducted in three different areas. Science, reading and maths
Where did the UK rank in the 2015 results according to the PISA rankings
15/72- science
21st- reading
27th- maths
What idea is behind the PISA rankings
nations who are at the bottom of the leaderboards will look to the nations consistently at the top such as Singapore as inspiration to improve their own education system.
What countries could the UK look to to increase teaching standards of mathematics
Finland, Estonia, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Korea, Canada
what does these tests and their outcomes ultimately suggest
globalisation can shape educational policy
Name another way that globalisation has directly influenced educational policy
different types of educational provision available
- first wave of acadamisation with city centre schools was based loosely on the American charter system
Free schools- 2010 based upon Scandinavian equivalents (Sweden and Finland) who were consistently topping rankings at that time.
Other influences- national literacy and numeracy campaigns
Aim of creating skills for a global workplace
What was a reaction to the UK’s lower status in the PISA rankings
additional funding for the teaching of maths and science
- number of initiatives to raise teacher knowledge- extensive teacher training courses
- funding teachers to study education at masters ( similar to scandi countries)
-longer periods of qualifications
Challenges these initiatives face
odds with austerity cuts and the application of market principles in UK education system
Less direct impacts of globalisation on educational policy
developments of western culture and neo-liberal economics which has lead to anti globalisation moments and in some cases terrorist activity
How has the UK government reacted to the threat of terrorism
British values and the PREVENT scheme- to combat young people potentially being radicalised by terror organisation
HOW has globalisation influenced marketisation and privatisation in education
.
what do many UK universities have
Campuses in less developed nations and a growth of uk educational trusts operating oversees.
what are these as a result of
neo liberal free trade economics as part of the expansion of global markets
what has increased travel and UK having one of the highest ranking universities
attracting students from accross the globe
-oversees students pay higher fees than their UK counterparts- although this was one of the reasons for increasing UK fees in 2010
what has increased students from other countries encouraged
Funding for ESOL- english for speakers of other langauges EAL- english as additional langauge. Allow them to obtain a level 2 (GCSE) in English and Maths to be part of the UK workforce.
Impacts of globalisation on education that are not part of educational policy regarding global reaserch
teaching and learning activities are influenced by global reaserch on teaching methods
- growth mindset
-cognative load theory
How has migration lead to changes in the curriculum
subjects such as Arabic and Polish offered to students
- multi cultural approaches have increased attainment in minority ethnic groups
what do some critics suggest regarding migration and changes to curriculum
there is still a need to decolonize the curriculum from its basis of ‘Little englandism’- Stephen Ball 1993
How can the global ranking systems be criticized
Too narrow focus of skills if any science, reading and maths is monitored
cultural differences in nations- offer an example
Applying a policy from one area of the globe to another may not have the desired effects due to external constraints
EDUCATIONAL APPROACHES IN EASTERN AISIA- high emphasis on testing may suit the performance based UK system
- other systems such as Finnish rely on heavy funding and personal autonomy for teachers- market values does not favour this
