Globlisation Flashcards
(12 cards)
Kelly
In the past 30 years, Britain’s educational system has become increasingly geared towards global economic competitiveness such as Michal gove adjusting the national curriculum in 2013 based off a poor result in PISA
Ball
British public schools and unversities increasingly market themselves to a global audience by setting up overseas branches
Holborn
Globalisation may have positive effects on the British educational system since increased migration has led to a more multicultural curriculum
Role of international comparisons and policy
Compare the educational performance of a range of countries where every 3-5 years a large , representative sample of 9-15 year olds from 50-65 countries are tested on maths, science and reading
Used to monitor educational systems such as acknowledging that the uk spends well above the average county on education but performs less well than countries who spend less
Positive :Pisa shock in Germany
2001 - following a score below average in the 2000 PISA tests the government resulted in doubling the spending on education + greater support for disadvantaged students and increasing the early access in eduction
This led to the average pupils achievement increasing by half a year
Positive impact on policies in the uk
National literacy and numeracy strategies in the uk from the labour government which was imposed on every primary school in England to ensure 2hours of numeracy and literacy were taught a day
Slimming down the national curriculum
2010-2015 coalition gov. - Michael gove in 2012 claimed that his new curriculum combined the best of global educational practices from Hong Kong, Massachusetts, Singapore and Finland
Access to global markets
Hancock estimates that ‘exports’ in 2013 were worth £18 billion to the UK economy. Schools, colleges, universities and publishers sold to priority markets such as Brazil, china, India and the gulf states
And British exam boards offer international GCSEs and Alebvels to students in over 60 countries
Global education reform movement
It’s symptoms of competition, choice and constant measurements of teacher and pupil performance are leading up to a homogenised, Americanised and anglicised global schools system that ignores the most important things in education
Wales - teaching to the test
Published a teachers guide on how to incorporate PISA into lessons
Ball - negative
Critical of globalised educational services. He believes there are long term implications of the neo liberal philosophy and the practice of applying market forces to services that are provided free of charge by the state
By treating education as a business and not valuing it is an intrinsic human right he argues that students are increasingly seen as commodities
Alexander
Notes that the comparison between the uk and high performing countries like Hong Kong or Singapore are not valid as the cultures are so different and the systems are not comparable.
England has 24300 schools and Singapore has just 350
