Glossary Flashcards
(31 cards)
DA / H
Decision Altitude (MSL) / Height (above threshold AGL)
The point on a vertically guided approach (ILS, LPV, etc.) at which a pilot must decide whether to continue the approach or go around.
MAA
Maximum Authorized Altitude
MCA
Minimum Crossing Altitude
The lowest altitude at certain fixes that an airplane must cross when flying in the direction of a higher MEA.
MDA / H
Minimum Descent Altitude (MSL) / Height (above threshold AGL)
The lowest altitude / height to which a descent is authorized on a non-precision approach until the pilot sees the visual references required for landing.
MEA
Minimum Enroute Altitude
The lowest published altitude between radio fixes which assures acceptable navigational signal coverage and meets obstacle clearance requirements.
MOCA
Minimum Obstruction Clearance Altitude
The lowest puiblished altitude in effect between fixes on VOR airways, off-airway routes, or route segments which meets obstacle clearance requirements for the route segment. Acceptable navigational coverage only within 22 NM of a VOR.
MORA
Route & Grid
Minimum Off-Route Altitude
Route MORA provides obstruciton clearance within 10 NM to either side of airway centerlinesand within a 10 NM radius at the end of airways.
Grid MORA provides obstruction clearance within a lat / long grid block.
`
MRA
Minimum Reception Altitude
The lowest altitude on an airway segment where intersection can be determined using radio navigational aids.
MTA
Minimum Turning Altitude
Provides vertical and lateral obstacle clearance in turns over certain fixes. Annotated with the MCA X icon and a note describing the restriction.
MVA
Minimum Vectoring Altitude
The lowest altitude at which an IFR aircraft will be vectored by a radar controller, except as otherwise authorized for radar approahes, departures, and missed approaches.
OROCA
Off Route Obstruction Clearance Altitude
Provides obstruction clearance with a 1,000’ buffer in non-mountainous terrain areas and 2,000’ in mountainous areas. May not provide navigation or signal coverage.
Va
Designed Maneuvering Speed
Vs
Stall Speed - Clean Configuration
Vs0
Stall Speed - Landing Configuration
Vs1
Stall Speed - Specific Configuration
Vfe
Max Flap Extension Speed
Vno
Max Structural Cruising Speed
Vne
Never Exceed Speed
Vx
Best Angle of Climb
Vy
Best Rate of Climb
INDICATED ALTITUDE
Uncorrected altitude on the dial when set to local pressure settings (QNH).
PRESSURE ALTITUDE
Altitude at the standard 29.92 Hg plane (QNE). Used when flying above the transition altitude.
DENSITY ALTITUDE
Pressure Altitude corrected for non-standard temperatures. Used for performance calculations.
TRUE ALTITUDE
Actual altitude above Mean Sea Level (MSL).
