Producing news across all platforms.
Alternative Representations
A representation that is different from the dominant representation, often with different values from the dominant ideology and often made by non-mainstream media companies.
Anchoring
When a caption is placed in an open text to anchor meaning.
Anthropomorphising
Giving a non-human subject human-like qualities to create particular effect.
Auteur Theory
Suggests that directors are the authors of their films, and that they reflect they’re visual style, themes, values and ideologies.
Base
Marxist term referring to economic core upon which a society is organised, or the central means by which wealth is created and distributed among society.
Binary Oppositions
When a text is divided into two clear groups of characters, situations or values. (Eg. Police and Criminals)
Bollywood
The Indian Film industry whose output exceeds that of the US film industry.
Bourgeoisie
Marxist term for the middle classes.
Bricolage
The process of creating a media text out of a series of artefacts, styles and signs from other media texts or cultural artefacts.
Britishness
The essence of what it means to be British. (It’s more a media representation than an agreed shared set of values)
Capitalism
The economic system in which a society is focused upon the pursuit of wealth. (Usually criticised as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer)
Censorship
The restriction and control of media content by governments and media producers.
Citizen Journalism
Where ordinary people and professional journalists are creating the news.
Closed Text
A text with only one possible meaning.
Open Text
A text with more than one possible interpretation. (Often called Polysemic Text)
Colourising
Using a tool to change the colour range of a particular (set of) photo(s).
Connotation
A secondary idea or feeling which a word invokes for a person in addition to its primary meaning.
Constructionist View
A view of representations that suggests our knowledge of the world is constructed by media representations.
Cropping
Removing unwanted parts of an image or changing the focal point of an image by repositioning it’s borders.
Cross-Cultural Factors
The differences in culture between nations and groups within nations.
Cultural Concern
An issue, concern or paranoia that a society or culture becomes preoccupied with or worried about.
Cultural Imperialism
A process by which one country dominates other countries’ media consumption and consequently dominates their values and ideologies.
Cyberspace
The virtual world of computers and telecommunications, which connects millions of individuals without reference to geographical places.
