absenses (petitmal)
epilepsy in which there is a sudden minor loss of consciousness with only minor myclonic jerks.
akathisia
an urge to move about constantly; and an inability to sit still

antacid substances possess some gastric acid neutralising properties and have been useful for a wide variety of digestive disorders
anti-anxiety
drugs which reduce anxiety, i.e diazepam
antibacterial
a substance which destroys/suppresses bacteria growth
antibiotic
an agent which prevents the growth of or destroys bacteria
antichihlingeric
an agent that blocks the passage of impulses through the parasympathetic nerves
anti-emetic
a drug that stops vomiting
antihistamines
a class of drugs which counteract the actions of a substance called ‘histamine’ which generally, when released in the body can be responsible for various problems, eg. allergic reactions
anti-inflammatory
an agent which counteracts/suppresses the inflammatory process
antinausent
prevents or relieves nausea
antipsychotic
effective in the use of psychosis ie. major tranquilisers
antipyretic
a drug used to lower the body temperature in fever
antispasmotic
a drug used to relieve spasm
antitussive
a substance for the relief or prevention of coughing
antiulcerant
an agent that prevents or promotes the healing of ulcers
aperients
a mild and gentle laxative
ataxia
incoordination of voluntary muscle actions resulting in an inability or difficulty in performing certain actions or movements
