Glossary of Terms (P2) Flashcards
(17 cards)
acute overload
an ‘average’ training load
adenosine triphosphate
high-energy compound which the body derives its energy
adrenaline / epinephrine
chemical compound that serves as a neurotransmitter
anabolic steroids
drug with growth stimulating characteristics - increases body size, muscle mass and strength
anaerobic metablosim
production of energy (ATP) in the absence of oxygen
aerobic vs. anaerobic training
long, cardio endurance vs. short, high-intensity endurance
arteries
blood vessels that transport blood AWAY from the heart
arterioles
smallest arteries that transport blood from larger arteries to the capillaries
atrophy
loss of size, or mass of body tissue
barometric pressure
total pressure exerted by the atmosphere at a given altitude
capillaries
smallest vessels transporting blood from the heart to the tissues and sites of exchange between the blood and tissue
cardiac output (Q)
volume of blood pumped out by the heart per minute
Q = heart rate x stroke volume
cardiovascular drift
increase in heart rate during exercise to compensate for a decrease in stroke volume - helps maintain constant cardiac output
catabolism
tearing down of body tissue - destructive phase of metabolism
central nervous system (CNS)
system consisting of the brain and spinal cord
chronis adaptation
physiological change that occurs when the body is exposed to repeated exercise bouts over weeks or month - improves body’s efficiency at rest and during exercise
chronic hyertrophy
increase in muscle size that results from repeated long-term resistance training
