Glycolysis Flashcards
(8 cards)
Where does glycolysis take place?
The cytoplasm
Aerobic or anaerobic respiration?
Both
Stage 1
Glucose (6 carbon) is phosphorylated, 2 phosphate groups added using ATP (it gets hydrolysed into ADP and Pi)
Stage 2
Phosphorylated glucose is really unstable, it breaks down into 2 triose phosphate (3 carbons each, 1 phosphate each)
stage 3
The triose phosphate are oxidised, they lose a hydrogen each which is accepted by NAD which becomes NADH. 4 ATP is also released here via substrate level phosphorylation.
Stage 4
two pyruvate (3 carbon molecules) created
what are the products of glycolysis?
2 NADH
2 pyruvate
2 Net gain of ATP
how is the mitochondria adapted to its function?
large surface area due to presence of cristae- which enables the membrane to hold many electron transport chains and ATP synthase enzymes
