Glycolysis & Link Reaction Flashcards

1
Q

Does Glycolysis need oxygen?

A

No - it is the only phase of cellular respiration that can take place without without oxygen. So it is anaerobic

Q

What happens during the investment phase?

A

2 ATP are added to the Glucose making it Hexose Bisphospahte.
The Hexose Bi phosphate is then split into 2 molecules of Triose Phosphate.

Q

What happens during the Pay off phase?

A

Triose Phosphate now looses hydrogens creating the molecule Pryuvic Acid.
The hydrogen’s are removed by hydrogen/electron carrier NAD making it NADH+ H+
This reaction also creates 4 ATP making a net gain of 2 ATP.

Q

What happens to the 2 pryvate molecules produced in Glycolysis?

A

These are now transported by the link reaction to the matrix of the mitochondria.

Q

What happens in the Link reaction?

A

Pryruvate loose another carbon molecule by way of CO2.
More hydrogen atoms are removed by a NAD carrier making NADH+ H+
Co enzyme A joins with the new 2 carbon molecule Acetate, making Acetyl CoA

Q

What goes into the link reaction and what compounds come out of the Link Reaction?

A

In: 1 Pyruvic Acid & 1 CoA
Out: 1 Acetyl CoA, 1 NADH+H+ & 1 CO2
REMEMBER this cycle happens twice

Q

What happens to Pryuvate if no O2 is present?

A

It gets converted into lactic acid which then gets used as energy.
