- Increase motivation by giving the
athlete something to achieve - Increase self confidence by allowing
regular achievements - Reduces anxiety by controlling

help to monitor progress.

4 ways goals increase performance
A
- By directing attention. Goals can focus performers on what needs to be done to improve performance in sport
- By regulating the amount of effort that is put into a given task. This will ensure that there is no wasted effort on activities or movements that are unnecessary.
- Ensuring effort is sustained until the goal is reached. Goals motivate performers to continue with their efforts and not to give up too early
- By motivating people to develop a variety of strategies to reach their goals. In sport the development of successful tactics and strategies can make all the difference between winning and losing.

- Outcome also relates to how others rate your performance/judged
- E.g. An outcome goal in football might be to win an individual game or a tournament

against others performance - E.g. To improve the batting average for a cricketer
