What is the cause of Gonorrhoea?
A
Gram negative diplococcus Neisseria gonorrhoea

What are the features of Gonorrhoea?
A
- Males: urethral discharge, dysuria
- Females: Cervicitis (e.g. leading to vaginal discharge)
- Rectal and pharyngeal infection is usually asymptomatic

What are some complications of gonorrhoea?
A
- Disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI)
- Local complications
- Urethral strictures
- Epididymitis
- Salpingitis

What is the management of gonorrhoea?
A
- Ceftriaxone 500mg IM + Azithromycin 1g Oral. - both as a single dose.
- If ceftriaxone is refused or contraindicated use cefixime PO.

What is the most common cause of sepsis in young adults?
A
Disseminated gonococcal infection is the most common cause of septic arthritis in young adults.

Describe the classic inital triad of gonorrhoea infection and Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome.
A
Initially there may be a classic triad of symptoms: tenosynovitis, migratory polyarthritis and dermatitis.
Later complications include septic arthritis, endocarditis and perihepatitis (Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome)
