A
  • monarch either consulted with councillors or let them deal with it but stayed informed
  • Henry VII consulted household servants + called a great council when Simnel invaded
  • Henry VIII left Wolsey + Cromwell to deal with rebellions
  • Mary + Elizabeth- used secretaries + councillors
  • Exception - Duke of Somerset (Ed VI Protectors) - criticised for failing to use privy council in 1549
  • sometimes conflicting advice = wyatts some said use imperial troops others thought mary should leave london

A
  • slow process- communication with peripheral areas hard
  • Henry VII - spies followed lovell + stafford and had spies in European courts for Warbeck
  • Elizabeth - Francis Walsingham head spy - watched MQofS - he employed over 50 agents = decline in unrest after 1570
  • System Failed sometimes
  • Henry VIII ordered Early of Derby to arrest POG leaders- but earl to far away + couldn’t
  • duke of Somerset - unaware of JP’s failing to disperse Western rebels

A
  • 1st people to deal with issues jp’s + sheriffs - if this failed Nobility
  • AMG- rebels threatened to march on London- Dukes of Norfolk and Suffolk successfully ended this
  • Western - JP’s couldn’t deal with it- sir Carew sent but his attitude inflamed situation
  • Ketts - failure of gentry + sheriffs + lord lieutenant ( not enough troops) - until duke of Northumberland put it down
  • Oxfordshire- informers warned Jp’s + they successfully arrested leaders
