i. With this scheme, TN has now become the first state in India to provide free breakfast to students in
all government schools.
ii. The scheme was inaugurated at a government school at Thirukkuvalai in Nagapattinam district, the
birthplace of M Karunanidhi, former CM of TN and DMK patriarch.
Note: TN was the first to introduce the mid-day meal scheme in India in 1922 in the then-Madras
Presidency(Now Tamil Nadu).

i. PMJDY, the biggest financial inclusion initiative in the world, was introduced by Prime Minister (PM)
Narendra Modi on 15th August 2014 (Independence Day) and was launched on 28th August 2014.
About Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY):
• PMJDY aims to ensure access to financial services, namely, basic savings & deposit accounts,
remittance, credit, insurance, and pension in an affordable manner to all households in India.
• Under the scheme, a basic savings bank deposit (BSBD) account can be opened in any bank
branch or Business Correspondent (Bank Mitra) outlet, by persons not having any other
account.
• Accident Insurance Cover of Rs.1 lakh (enhanced to Rs. 2 lakh for new PMJDY accounts opened
after 28th August 2018) is available with a RuPay card issued to the PMJDY account holders.
• An overdraft (OD) facility up to Rs. 10,000 to eligible account holders is available.
