What is the definition of: Ordnance?
Is any weapon which is designed for the propulsion of a projectile in which an explosive force is used to give it, MOMENTUM, DIRECTION and STABILITY to that projectile.
If the calibre is less than one inch, then it is classed as small arms.
What is the definition of: Gun?
A piece of ordnance designed to fire over long ranges at relatively low angles of elevation.
What is the definition of: Howitzer?
A piece of ordnance designed to fire over varying ranges by using varying size charges and at relatively high angles of elevation.
What is the definition of: Gun-How?
A combined weapon incorporating the characteristics of both a gun and howitzer.
What is the definition of: Mortar?
A piece of ordnance designed to fire bombs at high angles of elevation, with a low muzzle velocity and short ranges.
IT IS MUZZLE LOADED
What is the definition of: Lands?
The raised portion of the bore between the grooves of the rifling.
What is the definition of: Bore?
The machined interior of the barrel extending from the front of the chamber to the muzzle face. It includes the chamber, shot seating and rifled section.
What is the definition of: Chamber?
The machined interior of the barrel extending from the breech end of the barrel to the commencement of the rifling. ( C of R )
What is the definition of: Rifling?
A term applied to a system of grooves cut in the bore of the barrel to give the axial rotation to the projectile.
What is the definition of: Calibre?
The diameter of the bore.
What is the definition of: Calibre length?
This is the length of the bore measured in calibres.
What is the definition of: Projectile?
A warhead fired from a piece of ordnance.
What is the definition of: Commencement of rifling?
The position in the rifled portion of the bore at the breech end where the machined grooves first reach their maximum depth.
What is the definition of: Muzzle face?
The front face of the barrel excluding fittings.
What is the definition of: Chamber face?
The rear face of the barrel excluding fittings.
What is the definition of: Length of bore?
In Quick Fire (QF) ordnance, this is the measurement from the chamber face to the muzzle face.
In breech loading (BL) ordnance, this is the measurement from the front face of the obturator to the muzzle face.
What is the definition of: Shot travel?
The distance measured along the bore from the base of the projectile when rammed, to the muzzle face.
What is the definition of: Windage?
The radial clearance between the lands and the projectile ( less its driving band).
What is the definition of: Driving band?
One or more bands fitted around the projectile to engage in the rifling.
What is the definition of: Shot Seating?
The conical portion of the bore where the chamber diameter is reduced to join the rifled portion.
The rifling develops the continuation of the cone, forming the shot seating.
Upon firing, the cone portion is engaged by the driving band and deforms it to fit the rifling.
What is the definition of: Obturation to the rear?
This is a means of preventing the propellant gasses escaping over or through the breech closing arrangements.
There are two types of obturation, QF (quick fire) and BL (breech loaded).
The Type of obturation employed will classify the equipment, ie, gun (QF) 105mm, Tank Gun (BL) 120mm.
What is the definition of: Obturation to the front?
Attached to the rear and outer diameter of the round is a driving band which is made of appropriate material.
The copper band will form a seal between the lands and grooves, so preventing propellant gasses escaping between the round and the rifling.
Coming into service is the new extended range ordnance (ERO)
What is the definition of: Obturation in QF (Quick Fire)?
In QF ordnance, the obturation is achieved by a tapered cartridge case ( normally made of brass) and is the function of the ammunition.
What is the definition of: Obturation in BL (Breech Loaded)?
In BL ordnance, the obturation is incorporated into the breech mechanism.
The seal is in the form of a resilient pad, or metal to metal inserts.
