Gr11 Geomorphology Quiz 1 Flashcards
(36 cards)
Batholith
Large body of igneous rock, solidified at a great depth.
Bedding plane
A joint or junction between layers of sedimentary rock.
Bedrock
Solid rock underneath loose soil and sand.
Butte
A flat-topped landform that is narrower than its height.
Canyon
A landscape made of deep, narrow valleys.
Conical hill
A rounded hill that forms once the resistant cap rock has been has been completely removed through weathering and erosion.
Chemical weathering
The breaking down of rock due to a change in their chemical composition.
Cross-section
Drawing of a side view of a landform or landscape.
Cuesta
An asymmetrical ridge where the layers are inclined at a 10° to 35° angle.
Cuesta basin
A circular shaped cuesta ridge with the scarp slopes facing inwards.
Cuesta dome
A circular shaped cuesta ridge with the scarp slopes facing outwards.
Dip slope
The gentler slope of a homoclinal ridge.
Dyke
A wall-like igneous intrusion.
Erosion
The removal/movement of rock particles from one location to another through water, wind or ice.
Escarpment
A steep slope connecting a low-lying area to a high-lying area. It is often made up of a number of mountain ranges joined together.
Granite dome
Rounded massive granite batholith exposed on the surface through erosion.
Hogsback ridge
An asymmetrical ridge where the dip slope is very steep, at an angle greater than 45°.
Homoclinal ridge
Collective name for asymmetrical ridges that have formed by a tilted resistant layer of rock.
Laccolith
A mushroom-shaped igneous intrusion.
Landslide
When a large mass of land breaks loose and plunges/slides down a slope.
Lopolith
A saucer-shaped igneous intrusion.
Magma
Molten rock within the Earth.
Mass movement
The movement of material down a slope due to the force of gravity. Also known as mass wasting.
Massive rocks
Form without any layering and can cover vast areas.
