What is a Simple Sentence?
A Simple Sentence consists of a single independent clause.
Examples: She ate lunch. We went to the movie last night. I was invited to the party.
What is a Compound Sentence?
A Compound Sentence consists of two independent clauses connected with a comma and coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS). A semicolon is used when a coordinating conjunction is not used.
Examples: She ate lunch, but she was still hungry. We went to the movie last night, and we stopped for coffee afterward. I was invited to the party, so I bought a present.
What is a Complex Sentence?
A Complex Sentence consists of an independent clause joined by a dependent clause.
Examples: She was still hungry even though she had eaten lunch. We went to the movie last night because I received a medal. Although I was invited to the party, I did not want to go.
What is a Compound-Complex Sentence?
A Compound-Complex Sentence consists of two independent clauses and one dependent clause.
Examples: She was tired, and she was still hungry even though she had eaten lunch. John didn’t come because he was ill, so Mary was not happy.
