A

Like in our conference, the delegates discussed joining into one country. After the meeting was over, the delegates felt that they had more to talk about, so they decided to have a second conference in Quebec in one month’s time.

  • The United Province of Canada would be split into Ontario and Quebec
  • A federal Parliament would be composed of two law-making houses. One would be the House of Commons, and its members would be elected according to Rep. by Pop.

What is the BNA act, and what does it state?

A

The British North America act created the Dominion of Canada in 1867. It stated the powers of the provincial and federal governments, outlined the way in which the government would be structured, and guaranteed protection for minority groups. The British North America act was the first Canadian Constitution.

Summarize what the constitutional change is.
Ever since 1867, changes to the constitution have been discussed. The most important changes were made in the Constitutional act. The Meech Lake Accord and the Charlottetown Accord proposed other changes. Also, in Quebec, the people voted on two proposals to give their province more power and the right to re-negotiate confederation.

What were the main changes to the British North America act in 1982?
1. It was re-named to Constitution Act of 1867 2. It was changed to allow Canada to change its constitution without approval by Great Britain 3. Gave a Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to every citizen 4. The Countries' colonies would recive Federal grants of money for health, education and welfare. * Quebec refused to accept this act

Did the Meech Lake Accord get approved?
No. All colonies had to agree with it, and Manitoba didn't. They felt that the accord recognized only Quebec's distinctiveness and not the Aboriginal people's.
