Grade 9 Biodiversity Flashcards
(30 cards)
any heritable trait that helps an organism, such as a plant or animal, survive and reproduce in its environment
Adaptation
unique sequence of DNA
Genotype
the different sources that provide food for the survival of humans and animals
Food Source
match of a species to a specific environmental condition describes how an organism or population responds to the distribution of resources and competitors
A Niche
A type of allele that when present on its own will not affect the individual. Two copies of the allele need to be present for the phenotype to be expressed
Recessive Allele
What is a species?
a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of breeding with one another
Nonheritable Characteristic
cannot be passed down from one generation to another, through genes
the dependence of two or more people or things on each other
(example: bees and sexually reproducing flowers)
Interdependency
Asexual reproduction
reproduction that does not involve the fusion of gametes or change in the number of chromosomes
having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes
Heterozygous
Heritable Characteristic
coded in our DNA and hence can be passed on to the next generation. Example: eye colour, height, complexion, hair colour
detectable expression of the genotype
Phenotype
Dominant Allele
dominance is the phenomenon of one variant of a gene on a chromosome masking or overriding the effect of a different variant of the same gene
Homozygous
having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes
a variation of the same sequence of nucleotides at the same place on a long DNA molecule
Allele
type of asexual reproduction in which a new organism develops from an outgrowth or bud due to cell division
Budding
Define Population
the inhabitants of a particular area or amount of certain organisms. Eg. the population of humans on earth is 7.98 billion people
Ecosystem
eographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms, as well as weather and landscape, work together to form a bubble of life
the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms
DNA
Parasitism
relationship between species, where one organism, the parasite, lives on or inside another organism, the host, causing it some harm,
type of symbiotic relationship where all species involved benefit from their interactions
Mutualism
asexual reproduction by a separation of the body into two new bodies
Binary Fission
Behavioral adaptation
something an animal does usually in response to some type of external stimulus in order to survive
organism’s natural habitat, such as rainforests or wetlands, is altered to the point where it can no longer support the species’ existence
Habitat Loss
