Grade 9 Exam - Chemistry🧪 Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is an ion?
An ion is an atom that has a positive (+) or negative (-) charge.
How do atoms become ions?
Atoms gain or lose electrons to become ions.
What forms a negatively charged ion?
Gaining electrons forms a negatively charged ion (anion).
What forms a positively charged ion?
Losing electrons forms a positively charged ion (cation).
What do metals do to form positive ions?
Metals lose electrons to form positive ions.
What do non-metals do to form negative ions?
Non-metals gain electrons to form negative ions.
Fill in the blank: Metal = _______ donor.
electron
Fill in the blank: Non-metal = _______ acceptor.
electron
What is the difference between an atom and a molecule?
An atom is a single particle; a molecule is made of 2 or more atoms bonded together.
What is the difference between an element and a compound?
An element is a substance made up of one type of atom; a compound is made up of 2 or more different types of atoms bonded together.
What are compounds made up of?
Compounds are made up of 2 or more elements that have combined.
What are the two types of compounds?
Ionic and molecular.
What is an ionic compound?
An ionic compound is formed from a metal and a non-metal.
What is an ionic bond?
An ionic bond is formed because positively charged metal ions attract negatively charged non-metal ions.
What is a molecular compound?
A molecular compound is formed when non-metal atoms share valence electrons.
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is formed when non-metal atoms share valence electrons.
List properties of ionic compounds
- Solid at room temperature
- Very high melting points
- Are soluble in water
- Conduct electricity when dissolved in water
List properties of molecular compounds
- Solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature
- Lower melting points than ionic compounds
- Most are insoluble in water
- Do not conduct electricity when dissolved in water
