Gram-negative bacteria Flashcards
(41 cards)
what are the 4 groups of gram negative bacteria?
- cocci
- strict anaerobes (obligate)
- facultative anaerobes
- Curved rods
what does strict anaerobe (obligate) mean?
restricted to a particular function or mode of life.
Obligate anaerobes are
- poisoned by oxygen
- avoid contact with oxygen in order to grow
what does facultative anaerobe mean?
Not restricted to a particular function or mode of life
Facultative anaerobes can
- grow with or without oxygen because they have 2 different ways of metabolising (with & without O2)
what are the 3 stages of periodontal disease and what bacteria are involved at each stage?
- Plqaue accumulates around the neck of the tooth causing gingivitis (STREPTOCOCCUS)
- Plaque grows down beneath the tooth & gum to form a pocket (ACTINOMYCES)
- pocket deepens, gingivae recedes, bone is lost = periodontitis (PORPHYOMONAS GINGIVALIS & PREVOTELLA INTERMEDIA)
Define a periodontal pathogen
An organism in high numbers causing periodontal disease where it would usually either not exist at all or would in much smaller numbers
What does GNAB stand for?
Gram Negative Anaerobic Bacilli
what are the generalised 2 types of GNABs?
- motile ( capable of movement )
- non - motile
are motile or non-motile GNABs most dentally relevant?
non-motile
name 4 non-motile GNABs
- prophyromonas
- prevotella
- tamerella
- fusobacterium
how many micro-organisms are involved in perio disease?
10,000 - 100,000
what does porphyromonas look like under a microscope?
dark purple pigmented
what does porphyromonas need to exist and where does it get it from?
needs iron to live and gets it from haem
what gives prophyromonas its dark purple pigmented colour?
the iron scavenging molecules on the surface
where does porphyromonas obtain its energy from?
amino acids and peptides from the environment
what does porphyromonas produce?
proteases
what are proteases?
enzymes which break down proteins and peptides
where is porphyromonas gingivalis found?
- ginigval sulcus
- periodontal pocket
Porphyromonas gingivalis is a proven….?…. and has been shown to do ? in animal studies?
proven periodontopathogen and has ben proven to cause periodontitis and bone destruction in animal studies
what does prevotella look like under a microscope?
dark purple pigmentation
what type of GNAB is prevotella and what does it mean?
a saccharolytic GNAB
means sucrose is turned into acetic acid & succinic acid
what is prevoltella found?
the gingival sulcus and periodontal pocket
what type of prevotella is associated with periodontitis? how is it associated?
prevotella intermedia (numbers of the bacteria is associated with the severity of the periodontitis)
what type of prevotella is associated with gingival health?
prevotella nigrescens (increased numbers found in health)
what does tannerella forsythia look like under a microscope?
non - pigemented bacteria
