Q

what does strict anaerobe (obligate) mean?

A

restricted to a particular function or mode of life.

Obligate anaerobes are

  • poisoned by oxygen
  • avoid contact with oxygen in order to grow

3
Q

what does facultative anaerobe mean?

A

Not restricted to a particular function or mode of life

Facultative anaerobes can
- grow with or without oxygen because they have 2 different ways of metabolising (with & without O2)

Q

what are the 3 stages of periodontal disease and what bacteria are involved at each stage?

A
  1. Plqaue accumulates around the neck of the tooth causing gingivitis (STREPTOCOCCUS)
  2. Plaque grows down beneath the tooth & gum to form a pocket (ACTINOMYCES)
  3. pocket deepens, gingivae recedes, bone is lost = periodontitis (PORPHYOMONAS GINGIVALIS & PREVOTELLA INTERMEDIA)

17
Q

where is porphyromonas gingivalis found?

A
  • ginigval sulcus

- periodontal pocket

18
Q

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a proven….?…. and has been shown to do ? in animal studies?

A

proven periodontopathogen and has ben proven to cause periodontitis and bone destruction in animal studies

19
Q

what does prevotella look like under a microscope?

A

dark purple pigmentation

20
Q

what type of GNAB is prevotella and what does it mean?

A

a saccharolytic GNAB

means sucrose is turned into acetic acid & succinic acid

21
Q

what is prevoltella found?

A

the gingival sulcus and periodontal pocket

22
Q

what type of prevotella is associated with periodontitis? how is it associated?

A

prevotella intermedia (numbers of the bacteria is associated with the severity of the periodontitis)

23
Q

what type of prevotella is associated with gingival health?

A

prevotella nigrescens (increased numbers found in health)

24
Q

what does tannerella forsythia look like under a microscope?

A

non - pigemented bacteria

25
what type of GNAB is tannerella forsythia?
a sacchorolytic GNAB ( sucrose converted into acrtic acid and succinic acid )
26
what is the relevance of tannerella forsythia on ginigval tissues?
It is a SIGNIFICANT organism in periodontitis but CANNOT show pathogenic activity in isolation
27
what is a virulence factor?
factor required before an organism has the capacity to cause the host damage
28
give some virulence factors for tannerella forsythia
- Fibronecitin/fibrinogen binding BSpA - apoptosis inducing factor - protease (enzyme that breaks down protein and peptides)
29
what does tannerella forsythia have on its surface?
binding protein
30
what is BSpA?
a surface binding protein
31
what does BSpA do?
it induces the release of cytokines that are - BONE RESORBING - PRO-INFLAMMATORY so it basically induces the resorbtion of alveolar bone and induces inflammation
32
what other bacteria does Tannerella forsythia interact with? what does this cause?
1. porphromonas gingivalis - to aid attachment to epithelial cells 2. fusobacterium
33
what does fusobacterium look like under a microscope?
sprindle shaped (fusiform - tappering at both ends)
34
how is fusobacterium usually arranged?
in pairs
35
what properties of fusobacterium nucleatum make it pathogenic?
1. it is a BRIDGING organism - is created a sticky surface for other bacteria to bind to. 2. On disintegration the bacteria releases an endotoxin which is linked to periodontal disease
36
fusobacterium can adhere to gram - or gram + bacteria?
both
37
where is fusobacterium nucleatum found?
mainly in the human ginigval sulcus
38
when combined to ??? fusobactrium nucleatum is assocaited with ???
when combined to TREPONEMA VINCENTII it is associated with NUG
39
give an example of 2 spirochetes?
- treponema vincenitii | - treponema denticolla
40
where are spirochetes found?
the base of the pocket
41
what shape are spirochetes and how do they move?
spiral shaped with flagella that propels bacteria into a cell like cork screws
