nouns
These are names of people, places, things, or ideas. Remember them as the “who,” “what,” or “where” in a sentence.
ex: cat, city, happiness
verbs
These show actions or states of being. Think of them as the “doing” or “being” part of a sentence.
ex: run, eat, think
adjectives
These describe or modify nouns. Picture them as adding details to the nouns.
ex: happy, tall, blue
adverbs
These describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They often end in “-ly” and tell you how, when, where, or to what extent.
ex: quickly, softly, very
pronouns
These replace nouns to avoid repetition.
ex: he, she, it, they, etc.
prepositions
These show relationships in time or space. Think of them as words that link nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence.
ex: in, on, under, beside
conjunctions
These connect words, phrases, or clauses.
ex: and, but, or, so.
articles
These are words like “a,” “an,” and “the” that define a noun as specific or unspecific
ex: a, an, the
interjections
These are words or phrases that express strong emotions. They often stand alone and are followed by an exclamation mark
ex: Wow!, Ouch!, Yay!
