Noun
A person, place, thing, or idea.
Examples: teacher, country, television, science
Proper Noun
A specific noun that should be capitalized.
Examples: Mr. Lickfeld, United States, Samsung, Biology
Verb
An action word that shows what the subject does or feels.
Examples: to be, to go, to swim, to eat, to feel, to hope
Linking Verb
A verb that connects the subject to more information; does not show action.
Examples: is, am, are, was, were
Example sentence: Grammar is cool.
Adjective
A word that modifies a noun to add description.
Examples: yellow ball, quiet room, cold water
Adverb
A word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb to describe how, when, where, or to what extent.
Examples: He quietly ran. She sings beautifully. It’s very cold.
Preposition
A word that shows a relationship between two other words, often involving place, time, or direction.
Examples: under, in, around, on
Prepositional phrase
A group of words that starts with a preposition and modifies part of the sentence.
Examples: under the table, in the building
Pronoun
A word that replaces a noun. It usually refers to an antecedent (the word it replaces).
Examples: I, they, we, it, he, she, this, that, those, these
Possessive Pronouns: his, hers, mine, ours
Article
