Gravitational Fields Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the laws of gravity?
Mass makes gravity
The closer you are to the mass the stronger it is
Gravity is always attractive
Gravitational fields extend infinitely
What are the units for gravitational field strength?
N/kg
What are the units for GFS in SI units?
M/s2
Equation for Fgrav
-Gm1m2/r2
Equation for g
-GM/R2
What is an ellipse?
The set of all points (x,y) in a plane such that the sum of their distances from two fixed points is a constant. Each fixed point is called the focus of the elipse
What is keplers first law?
The orbit of a planet is an elipse with the sun at one of the two foci
Keplers second floor
A line segment joining a planet and the sun sweeps out equal areas during equal intervals of time
Keplers third law
T squared is proportional to r cubed
Equation for keplers third law
4(pi)squaredx r cubed/GM = T squared
What is a geostationary orbit?
Orbit around the equator that has a period of 24 hours
Moves at the same speed as the ground beneath it
Useful for communication
What is a low polar orbit?
Low orbit
High speed
Orbital period of much less than a day e.g 1.5hours
Can be used for weather and environment monitoring.
