8 causes of the Great Depression

A
  1. industries in trouble after the war boom (factories were made and got huge business from the war effort; when the war ended, no more business)
  2. Farmers have no price supports (the government was sitting back and watching to avoid socialism; the gov’t used to buy surplus crops at a guaranteed price to sell on the black market)
  3. Living on credit (buy now, pay later; people appear that they have money to keep up looks, people wear suits even if they are dirt poor)
  4. Gap in wealth (over 70% are under the standard of living
  5. Loaded stock market (Dow Jones shows how good or bad the economy is, as Dow rises, people put money in; by 1929, 4 million Americans owned stocks)
  6. Speculation- the short gain (ignore risks and buy on the chance of profit)
  7. Buying on margin (because of good stock market, people are borrowing money in order to invest)
  8. Run-on banks (banks forced to close because they have no money)

A

An army was promised money for fighting in the army and when they get back, they wanted the money before the date when they were promised it. They went and sat on the White House lawn for days at a time before the President called the National Guard in and sprayed tear gas and killed the soldiers.

Hoovervilles

A

Thousands of people built these shacks and were forced to live in them because of how poor they were. They were called Hoovervilles because they blamed Hoover for not helping them and causing them to live in these “houses”.
