What is the purpose of GRI standards?
To help organizations communicate their impacts on economy, environment and people transparently and consistently
What is the reporting system used in the GRI standards called?
Modular and interrelated, consisting of 3 series of standards : Universal standard, Topic-specific standard and Sector standard
Introduce the 3 standards
Universal standards : applicable to all organizations and required for all GRI reporting
Topic - specific standards : cover specific sustainability topics
Sector standards : address sector specific impacts
The ways to use the GRI standards
Two ways:
1. Reporting “in accordance with “ the GRI standards - applying all requirements in GRI 1, using GRI 2 & 3 and reporting material topics with the relevant Topic/ Sector standards
2. Using selected GRI standards or disclosures - only using parts of the standards without full compliance
Steps to report in accordance with GRI standards
Step 1 : apply GRI 1
Step 2 : using GRI 2 (general disclosures)
Step 3 : using GRI 3 to determine material topics
Step 4 : use relevant Topic and/ or Sector standards
Due diligence in the GRI context
A process to identify, prevent, mitigate and account for how an organization addresses its actual and potential negative impacts
What is an impact
The effect an organization has on the economy, environment or people including human rights.
What are material topics?
Topics that reflect the organization’s most significant impacts on the economy, environment and people
