Ground Unit 2 Flashcards
(23 cards)
When is the magnetic compass accurate?
In straight and level flight only
When do acceleration and deceleration errors occur?
In the northern hemisphere on east and west headings
What will the compass indicate during acceleration on an East / West Heading?
A turn to the north
Deceleration on an East / West Heading?
A turn to the south
Does acceleration cause compass error on a North / South Heading?
No
In the northern Hemisphere what compass error will occure on a North South Heading
When turning from a North or South Heading there will be a turning compass error
From a north heading when you turn what will the compass error be?
The compass will initially indicate a turn in the opposite direction (If turning west from north the compass will initially indicate a turn to the east) Then the compass will lag behind the actual heading.
From a Southern Heading what will the compass heading
Turns from the south will lead the actual heading
How do you remember the compass turning errors?
NUS- North Undershoot
SOS- South Overshoot
What instruments run off the Pitot- Static System?
- Altimeter
- Vertical Speed Indicator
- Airspeed Indicator
What is the source of ram air?
Pitot Tube
If only the pitot tube is clogged what instrument will fail?
The airspeed indicator
If the static tube is clogged what instruments will fail?
All three, The Vert Speed And altimeter only need the static line.
What is absolute altitude?
Altitude above the surface. (AGL)
What is true altitude?
Altitude above sea level (MSL)
What is pressure altitude?
Altitude indicated when the altimeter is set to 29.92
What is density altitude?
Pressure altitude corrected for nonstandard temperature.
In standard conditions exist and the altimeter is calibrated properly what will the indicated altitude be equal to?
True Altitude
How can you tell if the altimeter is set correctly?
Indicated altitude is equal to true altitude (MSL) and will be equal to the field elevation.
What makes the indicated altitude increase?
A Decrease in Pressure
What will 1in of pressure change do to the altimeter?
Change indicated altitude by 1000 ft.
When are pressure altitude and density altitude equal?
At standard temperature conditions
When are pressure altitude and true altitude the same?
In standard atmospheric conditions.
