Ground Water Level: Measuring Groundwater Levels Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
A
2
Q
What instrument is used to measure the groundwater level?
A
Piezometer – Measures groundwater pressure and level changes.
3
Q
What is the formula for hydrostatic pressure?
A
P = γ_w × h
Where:
P = hydrostatic pressure (kN/m²)
γ_w = unit weight of water (10 kN/m³)
h = water depth (m)
4
Q
What are the three groundwater zones?
A
Vadose Zone – Above the groundwater table, pores contain air and water.
Capillary Fringe – Water rises due to capillary forces.
Saturated Zone – Pores fully filled with water below the groundwater table.
5
Q
How high can capillary action raise water?
A
Sand: 20–30 cm
Clay: Up to 20 m due to fine pores.
