GROUP 1 Flashcards
Group 1 ( ALKALI METALS ) reaction w. WATER
! React vigorously —> produces metal hydroxide solution - ALKALINE + HYDROGEN
—> FIZZING identified
Eg.
2Na (s) + 2H2O (l) —> 2Na OH (aq) + H2 ( g)
REACTION w. AIR ( OXYGEN ) - this is why they TARNISH
Eg.
Li2 —> Lithium Oxide
Na2O —> Sodium oxide. Na2O2 —> Sodium peroxide
K2O2 —> Peroxide KO2 —-> potassium superoxide
ALKALI METALS - properties
- soft
- highly reactive —> stored in OIL
- low melting point
- as you go DOWN —> MORE REACTIVE
Li < Na < K
REACTION w. Water observations
Li - fizzes + floats + disappears
Na - forms a ball - moves around surface - fizzes rapidly before disappearing
K - floats and moves around very quickly on surface of water - SELF IGNITES - ignites hydrogen GAS - LILAC FLAME
Loss of electrons
- as you go down - outermost electron is FURTHER form NUCLEUS
- attraction between OUTERMOST electron & NUCLEUS
—> decreases
! Gets weaker as it goes down —> more reactive
