Q

Group 1 ( ALKALI METALS ) reaction w. WATER

A

! React vigorously —> produces metal hydroxide solution - ALKALINE + HYDROGEN

—> FIZZING identified

Eg.

2Na (s) + 2H2O (l) —> 2Na OH (aq) + H2 ( g)

Q

REACTION w. AIR ( OXYGEN ) - this is why they TARNISH

A

Eg.

Li2 —> Lithium Oxide

Na2O —> Sodium oxide. Na2O2 —> Sodium peroxide

K2O2 —> Peroxide KO2 —-> potassium superoxide

Q

ALKALI METALS - properties

A
  • soft
  • highly reactive —> stored in OIL
  • low melting point
  • as you go DOWN —> MORE REACTIVE

Li < Na < K

Q

REACTION w. Water observations

A

Li - fizzes + floats + disappears

Na - forms a ball - moves around surface - fizzes rapidly before disappearing

K - floats and moves around very quickly on surface of water - SELF IGNITES - ignites hydrogen GAS - LILAC FLAME

Q

Loss of electrons

A
  • as you go down - outermost electron is FURTHER form NUCLEUS
  • attraction between OUTERMOST electron & NUCLEUS
    —> decreases

! Gets weaker as it goes down —> more reactive
