group 1 elements Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are Group 1 elements known as?
: The alkali metals.
Q: Name the Group 1 elements from top to bottom.
A: Lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium, francium
Q: Why are Group 1 elements reactive?
A: They all have one electron in their outer shell, which is easily lost
List three physical properties of alkali metals.
A: Soft, low density, and low melting and boiling points.
How does reactivity change as you go down Group 1?
A: Reactivity increases.
Q: Why does reactivity increase down Group 1?
A: The outer electron is more easily lost due to a weaker attraction between the nucleus and outer electron.
Q: What happens to melting and boiling points as you go down Group 1?
A: They decrease.
Q: What happens to relative atomic mass as you go down Group 1?
A: It increases.
Q: What type of compounds do Group 1 elements form with non-metals?
A: Ionic compounds.
Q: What colour are most alkali metal compounds?
A: White solids that dissolve in water to form colourless solutions.
Q: What gas is produced when Group 1 metals react with water?
A: Hydrogen gas.
Q: Describe the reaction of Group 1 metals with water.
A: They react vigorously, forming a hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
: What happens when sodium reacts with chlorine?
It forms sodium chloride, a white salt.
What oxide does lithium form when reacting with oxygen?
Lithium oxide (Li₂O).
What do potassium and oxygen form together?
A mixture of potassium peroxide (K₂O₂) and potassium superoxide (KO₂).
