Group 1 Metals Flashcards
(7 cards)
How do group 1 metals react with water?
They produce a metal hydroxide and hydrogen
What are the observations for the reaction of water
They fizz/hydrogen is produced
The metal floats and moves around on the water
The metal disappears
What is the reaction for Lithium?
Fizzing
Lithium floats and moves around on the water
Lithium disappears
What is the reaction for Sodium?
Fizzing
Sodium floats and moves around on the water
Sodium melts into a silver coloured ball
Sodium disappears
What is the reaction for Potassium?
Fizzing
Potassium floats and moves around on the water
Catches fire with a lilac flame
Potassium disappears
What happens when group 1 metals react with air
They oxidise
Explain the trend in reactivity in group 1 metals in terms of electronic configurations
As you go down the group the outer electron lost from group 1 metals is further from the nucleus making it easier for it to be lost
